WinTime Backup Advice

It is important to take regular backups of your system to prevent downtime and loss of information in the event of a PC failure. As a general rule we would advise at least weekly backups to be taken and backed up to removable media such as CD or tape, also having a small number of tapes to rotate the backup ensures backing up damaged files is reduced.

hfx can only advise on the files and folders to backup, it is the responsibility of each site to ensure that the backup software works and runs correctly. It is for this reason that we suggest contacting your IT department and asking them to add the WinTime backup into a scheduler.

To backup your system you need to identify which type of database your system uses. [Click Here] for details on how to find out which type your system uses.

Paradox Systems

With Paradox systems it is best to take a backup of the whole WinTime folder for your first backup. Then keeping this in a safe place you can follow the steps below to run regular backups by backing up just the bases and local folders as these will be the only folders which will change with time.

1) Close both Goldwin & WinTime
2) Locate the WinTime folder (often c:\wintime)
3) With both Goldwin & WinTime closed copy the Bases & Local folders to the backup device, for help doing this please consult with your IT department.
4) Once the files have been copied, remove the backup media from the device if applicable and restart Goldwin.

Interbase/Firebird Systems

With these types of systems we need to be onsite to install and set-up the database and system. We often recommend that the backup be scheduled to run late in the day when the system is on a break. To confirm the time points for the process please call the helpdesk and we can recommend a time to begin the backup routine.

We would recommend that your first backup of the system is the whole WinTime folder and then to keep this in a safe place. Then by following the below guidelines you can help ensure that just encase PC problems arise you have a working backup.

1) Close both Goldwin & WinTime (leave the system as is if scheduling the task)
2) Locate the WinTime folder (often c:\wintime)
3) Within the WinTime folder you should have a single file often called Wintime.gdb this will either be in the base folder or the IB6 folder. Whichever folder your system uses you should backup the gdb folder and local folder regularly.
4) Interbase systems can use batch files to backup and maintain the system and are installed and tested whilst onsite. For this reason we would always suggest having the procedures set-up either whilst onsite or by remote access.
5) If closing Goldwin to take a backup, ensure Goldwin is restarting or else balances will be slightly awry until it is next started.

SQL Systems

The table our software uses would have been set-up whilst onsite and as a result you should not need to change your standard SQL backup procedures.
